Went and spent my virus check on a new transmission for the Vette because the one in it had a crunchy synchros in second gear. Wasn’t too hard to pull actually, but I did find some interesting information...
Underside all together
C4 Corvette is always the answer! This is now the official Oppo vehicle as Mazda obviously copied GM with the C beam down the middle.
ZF Box
Transmission sitting on the mostly useless spare
Empty hole
Got a ZF S6-40 box that has only 65k miles and works perfect so that’ll be exciting. Also is a black tag vs the blue tag I pulled out. Supposedly the black tags are stronger and can take more power/ abuse due to the gears being cut differently.

Now that is what I call a stimulus.

Nice work. The power plant frame, as executed on a Corvette or Miata isn’t a new thing. It is a (simplified) variation of a torque tube, and those go back to the very beginning of automobiles. What did you do about the dual mass flywheel on these cars?

Pulling a transmission in your driveway looks a lot easier without a transfer case attached to it.

Oh fun, I haven’t done anything like that since the Z tranny swap. I would like to try and fit a different tranny with an overdrive into the M37, I don’t see anyone doing it with the original engine so there must be a reason why they aren’t.

My 86 4+3 was the easiest transmission I’ve worked on before o r since.
I think it took longer to get the car up o n blocks.

Definitely

The M37 doesn’t have overdrive?

Yeah I know, just trying to change the mot to around here ;)
What do you mean what did I do about it?

Yeah was far easier than with my partner’s Miata.

I.e, did you do the F-body single mass conversion, or gamble that the existing one will last the life of the current clutch?

Oh, I know there is a conversion, but I didn’t know it was from the F-Body. As of right now I have not done anything. I will check the life of the dual mass tomorrow and see if it’ll last another clutch or needs replacement.

Oh hell no, it’s a tractor. I swapped the gears so it will go 55mph, maybe 60 for short stretches. The main thing is the whole drivetrain goes through the transfer case so you just heat things up. Modern synthetic fluids help with heat but it’s not a good idea. The engine will never overheat unlike the driveline since it isn’t working very hard.

The conversion flywheel is an F-body flywheel with a bit of extra machining to fit . The conversion also usually uses an F-body clu tc h disk with a sprung hub. I want to say the vette pressure plate is used, but It has been a few years since I read up on all this.
